Nevi’im Rischonim – Jehoschua und Schoftim ist der Anfang der frühen Prophetenreihe nach dem System von S. R. Hirsch.
Raphael Breuer war der älteste Sohn von Sophie (Zippora), der jüngsten Tochter von Samson Raphael Hirsch, und Salomon Bruer. Sein Vater war Oberrabbiner in Pápa, bis er 1890 als Nachfolger Hirschs im Rabbinat der Israelitische Religionsgemeinschaft in Frankfurt am Main berufen wurde. Raphael Breuer erhielt seine Ausbildung in der vom Vater in Frankfurt gegründeten Jeschiwa (Talmud Hochschule) bei Rabbiner Salomon Kutner in Eisenstadt. Auch besuchte er die Wiener Schiffschul bei Jesaja Fürst. Nach der Reifeprüfung studierte er in Mainz, Gießen und Straßburg und promovierte 1905 mit einer Arbeit über Jacques Brongart. Von 1909 bis zu seinem Tode amtierte er als „Aschaffenburger Rav“, als Gemeinderabbiner in Aschaffenburg.
In seinen Schriften trat er besonders durch seine scharf antizionistischen Polemik hervor. Gemeinsam mit seinem Bruder Josef Breuer arbeitete er an der Kommentierung der Schriften der Hebräsischen Bibel. Aus seiner Feder erschienen Bibelkommentare zu den Büchern Ruth (1908), Esther (1910), Kohelet (1911), Josua (1915). Unter dem Eindruck des 1. Weltkrieges setzte er sich kritisch mit den Bestrebungen des Zionismus auseinander. Und in diesem Zusammenhang entstand das Buch der Richter (Schoftim) (1922). Und als 1912 der erste Kommentar zum Hohelied (Schir Haschirim) erschien, erregte dieser besonderes Aufsehen. 1923 stellte er seinem ersten Kommentar zum Hohenlied einen zweiten Kommentar zur Seite, der das allegorische Verständnis des Hohenliedes (als Lied der Liebe zwischen Gott und seinem Volk Israel) zum Inhalt hat.
Der vorliegende Band Jehoschua (Josua) und Schoftim (Richter) ist der erste Band der Trilogie der frühen Propheten. Es handelt sich hierbei um eine klassisch-orthodoxen Kommentar ganz im Sinne und System des grossen Meister und Gelehrten Rabbiner Samson Raphael Hirsch.
