Das vorliegende Werk untersucht die Entwicklung des jüdischen Gesetzes von den Ursprüngen bis zur Zeit des Talmudes. Es ist ein Grundlagenwerk für jeden am Judentum Interessierten und erfordert keine grossen Vorkenntnisse der Halacha. Das Buch behandelt die Zeitspanne vom ersten Tempel bis hin zum Talmud. Es behandelt auch Themen wie die Halacha (der Gesetzescodex) das Leben, die Sprache, die Speisen und die Kleidung der Juden beeinflusst.
Die jüdische mündliche Lehre ist keine Ideologie. Sie beruht in ihrem Reichtum auf der Offenbarung. Sie ist genau wie die schriftliche Tora von aussen gegeben und entspringt der gleichen Quelle wie das Leben selbst.
Mit diesem Buch wollen wir die Grundlagen aufzeigen, die für die Entwicklung der Halacha massgebend waren. Die Halachot der Tora sind als eine Einheit aufzufassen. Die Gebote sind alle miteinander verflochten und können daher auch nicht isoliert betrachtet werden. Die Halacha ist ewig – oder, wie es Rabbi Nathan aus Rom ausdrückte: „‚Halacha‘ (von der Wurzel ‚halach‘ – ‚gehen‘) ist etwas, was vom Anfang (der Welt) bis zu(ihre)m Ende geht“.
Elieser Levi wurde im Juni 1883 in Berlin geboren und verstarb am 4.November 1964 in Tel Aviv.
