Rabbiner Samson Raphael Hirsch (1808 – 1888), der in Deutschland lebte und wirkte, war einer der bedeutendsten jüdischen Persönlichkeiten seiner Zeit. Seine spezielle jüdische Weltanschauung wird auch heute auf der ganzen Welt gelehrt und gelebt. Er war ein Erneuerer, sah aber trotzdem die Autorität der Halacha als absolut an. Sein erzieherisches Ideal war “Tora im Derech Erez‘“. So ist der ideale Jude, seiner Meinung nach ein aufgeklärter Jude, der die Gebote hält.
Seine in den Jahren 1867 bis 1873 geschriebene fünfbändige Übersetzung und Kommentar zu den Fünf Büchern Moses (Chumasch), wird heute noch studiert. Und er ist ein wahrhaftiger Klassiker der jüdischen Tora-Literatur. Durch das ideelle Wirken des Morascha Verlages, Basel, ist sein Chumasch, der bis anhin nur in gotischer Schrift aufgelegt war, erstmal in einer modernen Schrift erhältlich. Die Haftarot, übersetzt und erklärt von seinem Sohn, Mendel Hirsch, sind in das Werk integriert.
